Guide For Competitors

  1. Bring two laptops plus all the leads and extension leads, pens and paper that you may require.
  2. No books, internet access or mobile phones allowed but students can bring pre-prepared school logos to add to their PowerPoint presentations.
  3. No pre-preparation required – all teams receive the question pack and materials at the same time at the commencement of the competition.
  4. All three team members must present with team member no. 1 leading with the business idea and business case, team member no. 2 presenting the marketing plan and team member no. 3 presenting the financial details. An example template will be provided for students to use, if they so wish
  5. Teachers may assist their teams with rehearsal of their presentations, but only after the presentations have been handed in. Presentations cannot be changed once they have been handed in.
N.B. Our experience has shown that teachers who try to over-enhance their students’ presentations have the opposite effect.
  6. Presentations should be completed within the specified time period (usually 9 minutes), with a further one- minute wrap-up time allowed. If teams go beyond their wrap up time they risk penalty time points being deducted from their total score. Depending on the number of teams involved at each event (typically 8), timings may vary.
  7. Teams will be judged on the following criteria:
  • Feasibility of the business idea:
Strength of presentation of business idea (Team Member No. 1)
Quality of the marketing plan (Team Member No. 2)
Plausibility of the financial details (Team Member No. 3)
  • Quality and content of the PowerPoint presentation
    Use of data
  • Delivery of the presentation
    Teamwork
The X factor – would you back their scheme?
  • Handling of questions
  1. Leave time for an introduction (of your team and your school) and a conclusion. The suggested optimum number of slides is six.
  2. Try and ensure that your slides can be read from the back of the lecture theatre/auditorium in which you will be presenting i.e. do not make figures too small and choose a suitable background colour.
  3. Do not waste time outlining ideas you have rejected. Concentrate on the positives of the scheme you have chosen – you are there to sell your idea. If doing a SWOT analysis, keep it very short and snappy. If in doubt, leave it out
